Chapter 15

Camilla sat on the front porch rocking Angel and watching Polly sew buttons on a strip of cloth. Maggie said it was the first step in learning to sew and Polly had decided she wanted to sew so she could make dresses for herself and Angel.

“I think I’ll make me a red dress, Camilla. Do you think red’s a pretty color?”

“Oh, yes. I like red, but I think blue or green looks better on you.”

“Why?”

“For one thing, your hair has some streaks of red when the sun hits it. Blue makes it look shiny and pretty. Green matches your pretty eyes.”

Polly pricked her finger with the needle, said, “Ouch!” and stuck her finger in her mouth.

“Did it hurt badly?”

She shook her head. “Not too much.”

“Just be careful. I don’t want you to have a handful of needle pricks. All the water might leak out of you.”

Polly giggled. “You know it won’t.”

Camilla stood quickly. “Come on, Polly. Let’s go inside.”

Polly was confused. “What’s wrong?”

“I hope nothing, but I see a rider coming this way. Since I don’t know who he is, I think we should go inside.”

Polly didn’t argue. She got off the stool she was sitting on and followed Camilla through the front door.”

“Maggie,” Camilla called as soon as they entered.

“Yes.”

“There’s someone headed this way. I brought the children in.”

Maggie came rushing into the front hall with her shotgun in her hand. “You did the right thing. Go on upstairs and I’ll see who it is.”

Polly laid the sewing on a table and grabbed Camilla’s hand. Her eyes were big and full of fright. “Is it Mr. White?”

“Probably not, honey, but we’re not going to take any chances. Let’s go to our room.” She urged Polly up the stairs. “We’ll come down as soon as we find out who this person is.”

As soon as they were in her room, Camilla turned to Polly. “I want you to listen carefully, Polly. We left Angel’s cradle downstairs so I’m going to put her in the middle of my bed. I want you to sit with her. She’s rolling over a lot now and I don’t want her to fall off.”

“What are you going to do?”

“I’m going to go down to the end of the hall and listen to Maggie when she talks to whoever is coming.”

“I want to come.”

“No, honey. You have to do like I say. We can’t leave Angel alone and I’m counting on you to protect her. Will you do that?”

Polly nodded. “But what if…”

“Blake showed me how to use a gun. I’m going to take the one he gave me and be sure nobody hurts Maggie.”

“What if they hurt you?”

“Then I’ll have to shoot them.”

“Do you really have a gun?”

“Yes. As I said, Blake gave it to me.” She went to the wardrobe and pushed back her dresses. “I hid it in here because I knew nobody would mess with my clothes and find it. Now, you do like I say and no matter what happens, don’t leave this room.
